A New Star Trek Series, Focusing on Starfleet Academy, Has Been Announced
MARCH 31, 2023 - All-New Original Series from CBS Studios will be soon going into production. It will follow the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets.
Now, for us old timers, we’ve been waiting for this for literally over 30 years. If you take a spin in the way back machine, you’ll remember that after Star Trek V: The Final Frontier was released, Harve Bennett was set to produce the new, sixth movie in the franchise, Starfleet Academy. It was going to wind back the clock and see our beloved Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and others as young cadets making their way into the new world of the Federation.
But…it never happened, and when it didn’t Bennett left the franchise (at that time). Now, Paramount+ announced yesterday the series order for the all-new original series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
We won’t be seeing our beloved TOS heroes, who are already spoken for on Strange New Worlds, but rather we’ll watch the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets as they come of age in one of the most legendary places in the galaxy. The series will begin production in 2024.
Young people come together to share a dream of optimistic hope for a better future. And of course, we’ll see them all under the watchful care of their instructors. And we’ll be introduced to a new threat to the Federation that they’ll need to deal with. As well as deal with another new adventure, adulthood.
Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, (who is joining the creative team) will serve as co-showrunners and executive produce the series. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will be produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. According to Domenic DiMaglio, Chief Marketing Officer and Head of Data for Paramount Streaming,
We are excited to introduce ‘Star Trek’ fans to a whole new generation of Starfleet officers in training as they navigate the rigors of the Academy and the brink of adulthood in STAR TREK: STARFLEET ACADEMY. Introducing new characters and compelling storylines, this all-new original series will serve as a fantastic addition to the franchise and Paramount+, bringing new generations of viewers and long-term ‘Star Trek’ fans alike together to enjoy the next chapter in the iconic ‘Star Trek’ universe.
However, another question comes up. What will be the time period setting for the new series? Turning raw data into fact, let’s consider this. In Star Trek: Discovery, it’s been over 100 years since Starfleet Academy closed. And let’s also remember that Lieutenant Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) transferred off of her starship to pursue a role at the new Starfleet Academy in season 4’s “All is possible.” Hmm, me thinks we’re not done with the 32nd century just because STD is getting ready to air its final season.
And if this is not already information overload, it was also announced that some new writer has been added to the team. Star Trek: Lower Decks’ Tawny Newsome, to be exact. (See what I did there?) Tawny Newsome has signed on as a writer for the new series. After the way we’ve seen her deliver lines these past few years, we’re confident that she’ll be able to write some stellar ones as well.
Thank you to our friends at Blog.Trekcore.com for breaking the news.
On a personal note, this will be my last article as a daily contributor. I will still be around but in a more limited role. I have another children’s book to finish and I’ll be editing another two volumes of Sherlock Holmes novels for Belanger Books, starting this summer, which will take me about 10 months as I read, edit, and buy several stories for the collection.
I’d like to thank those who’ve followed my stories and allowed me to indulge in some shenanigans from time to time. And other thanks to those who have commented on my stories and those who’ve emailed me as well. And a huge Thank You to Wil Wheaton who reposted one of my articles on his Facebook page and blew up our server that day.
And to the magnificent staff of DSTN. Dave, my brother. I love you man, let’s keep in touch. To Marina who can find news items that even Nicholas Cage couldn’t.
And to T. Rick Jones. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for allowing me to become a part of the magic that is the Daily Star Trek News team. I’m forever in your debt.
Until later…
