DECEMBER 3, 2020 - Yesterday, we brought you news that the upcoming Star Trek: Voyager documentary could be out in 2021. Now, in a new piece from TrekMovie.com, producer David Zappone has also indicated that a spinoff of his previous project, the Deep Space Nine documentary What We Left Behind, could also be in the cards.

Zappone was speaking to TrekMovie on their Shuttle Pod podcast, along with co-producer Joe Kornbrodt. They started off discussing how the Voyager documentary is progressing, before conversation turned to What We Left Behind: specifically, that they’re planning on expanding the writers’ room part of it into a separate project.

Zappone said, “We’re working on it now. It’s the writers’ room and it will also include some of the interviews and things we shot that couldn’t make it into What We Left Behind.” He implied that there was quite a bit of footage available, adding, “I think we can be doing What We Left Behind sequels for the next ten years.”

As far as the production of a potential spinoff, TrekMovie quoted Zappone as saying they’re “really in the creative stage”, and said he didn’t rule out another round of crowdfunding to get the project done. Zappone said, “People seem to be really happy with What We Left Behind. I think people felt they were proud and happy to have backed it.”

You can listen to TrekMovie’s full discussion with Zappone and Kornbrodt below, or on the Shuttle Pod podcast, wherever you get your podcasts.
