Akiva Goldsman talks about Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' future in new interview

Akiva Goldsman, co-creator of STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS

JULY 12, 2022 - As we enter the winter of our discontent in the middle of July, with no new Star Trek yet on the horizon following the conclusion last week of season one of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, one of the questions that arise is, “What happens next?” With regard to Strange New Worlds, one of the show’s co-creators, Akiva Goldsman, has some things to say about that and other aspects of the latest entry in the Star Trek universe.

Goldsman sat down with Deadline to reflect on the first season of SNW and to talk about where he would like the show to head in the future. He mentioned a number of ways that SNW “rubs up against” Star Trek: The Original Series and said, referencing the season one finale but also the “agnostic” nature of the show’s approach to storytelling, “We want you to like it for sure even if you know nothing, but if you know a bunch, then we want you to love it. The more you know, the more we want you to love it... If you don’t [know as much], it should still be cool because it’s talking about contemporary things.”

When asked about where SNW goes from here, Goldsman said, while reminding us of the “retconning” the show is doing, such as with the character of Spock, “I would love for this thing to run right into TOS…. So, ultimately, we should really be able to drive to “Where No Man Has Gone Before.”

Goldsman has other hopes for the show, such as crossovers with other Trek series in production, but he says those sorts of ideas are still up in the air, along with his other “pie-in-the-sky ideas.”

For now, head over to Deadline for more of what Akiva Goldsman had to say about SNW. But be warned: Here there be spoilers.

Season one of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is streaming now on Paramount+.
