Andreea Kindryd to Release Audio Version of Her Book About Working On 'Star Trek'
JUNE 19, 2023 - If you’ve been following DSTN over the past year, you know that Andreea Kindryd was one of the first people of color to be hired by a major television studio. She worked on Star Trek: The Original Series and specifically for Gene Coon.
We interviewed her about her bok From Slavery to Star Trek, which details how the infamous Watts riots led to that experience, as well as her friendship with Nichelle Nichols and her associations with activists Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, jr. During the interview, she treated us to a reading of some passages from the book. If you saw that interview and enjoyed hearing those passages in her own voice, there’s good news. Kindryd is getting ready to create an audio version of the entire book.
According to the blurb on Kickstarter:
From Slavery to the Stars is the personal journeys of an African American family. My book will transport you from Shankleville Freedom Colony in 1860s Texas to California. From a burning building in Watts to the set of the original Star Trek, and via South East Asia’s Hippie Trail to Sydney, Australia where I joined the First Nations people in their fight for rights under the stars of the Southern Cross. It's about history and comedy, drama and politics. Sex and drugs. Guided by an engaging character.
This is a terrific opportunity to hear Kindryd’s story in her own words and with her own voice. Not only that, but the audiobook has a unique connection to DSTN. “listening to the Trek news podcast started this,” Kindryd said via a Facebook post. “the blind guest you had on stirred me and made me want to support her. here’s the results.” She added, “the Great Bird said to me Love long and prosper.”
There are 9 days left for the Kickstarter, so if you would like to get involved, don’t sit on your laurels! And if you’d like to watch the original DSTN interview, all you need to do is scroll down a little.
