Armin Shimerman says "never say never" regarding a possible Quark return
AUGUST 25, 2022 - After Star Trek: Voyager actress Kate Mulgrew said that she’d consider a possible return to a live action Janeway series after Star Trek: Picard wraps up its three season run, other past Trek actors are making similar considerations.
At the Fanboy Expo in Knoxville, TN, veteran Star Trek: Deep Space Nine actor Armin Shimerman said that he would ‘absolutely’ return as his beloved character Quark, but that he would add a few conditions to his return…
The answer is yes. I would happily do it. I would not do a series regular again. I would not undergo that make up for another seven years. But for a guest star or to do what they’re going to do on Picard with some of the characters coming back…Yeah, I would do that. But! they’d have to pay me like they paid Michael Dorn.
As a personal friend of Mr. Dorn, he obviously has some inside details that we don’t! Reminiscing on his time with Dorn on DS9, he went on to state how Dorn is one of his closest friends and that the two of them stay in contact to this day.
He did spill some beans that Dorn had a hard time memorizing lines and it wasn’t uncommon for them to do 25 takes before he got them right, long after Shimerman was “done with it”. He also stated that fans might not recognize Dorn in PIC as he’s lost a lot of weight.
He also remembered asking the writers what was Quark’s IQ, as some scenes had him intelligent, while others had him not so much, which made it hard for him to play the character consistently. One of the biggest immediate directions that he wanted to take Quark when the show began, was out of the 2nd dimension. Shimerman had played Ferengi leader Letek in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “The Last Outpost” and was unhappy with the two-dimensional way that he had portrayed him. He later went on to say that the only good thing about that performance was that the check didn’t bounce. He was insistent that Quark be a fully fleshed-out character.
All of his happy memories are leading him to want to play the character again, briefly, if he would be offered the chance. For more on this and his thoughts on Quark, DS9, Michael Dorn, and more set a course for TrekMovie.com and read the entire article.
