For those of you waiting for an official announcement about whether the Star Trek Las Vegas convention will be cancelled this year, it looks like you may have to wait a little longer, if it gets cancelled at all.

Creation Entertainment has announced that Copper and General Admission tickets are now on sale, prompting confused reactions from fans who expected the convention to be cancelled altogether. Last Thursday, Creation tweeted a link to a statement which read:

“Dear fellow Star Trek fans:

“We hope you have been staying safe and healthy during this challenging time. While Creation has been social distancing as a team, we are still working hard to make the upcoming Official Star Trek Convention a grand celebration of Gene Roddenberry’s legacy for a hopeful future.  The event is set for August 5-9, 2020 at The Rio All-Suites Resort and Casino in fabulous Las Vegas.

“As we currently have 71 Star Trek celebrities attending, we are on our way to getting over 100 stars and will feature a non-stop five days of fun. Our top-tiered Gold Convention Admission Packages, the most upscale way to attend the entire convention, are nearly sold out and will be removed from sale by Monday, April 27.

“We also only have a few Captain’s Chair Admission Packages still available and today we have put on sale Copper Convention Packages and General Admission Convention Packages. Preferred (Reserved) Single Day and General Admission Single Day Tickets will be coming soon. [...]

“As something to look forward to this summer, we can’t wait to spend another truly intergalactic time in Vegas!”

The announcement comes amid nationwide confusion about whether to lift stay-at-home orders that have been in place since early March. Nevada itself has been under a stay-at-home order, which is in effect at least until April 30th. Creation Entertainment’s statement was especially unexpected after the announcement, earlier this month, that one of the world’s largest conventions, San Diego Comic Con, has already been cancelled.

Reaction to Creation’s announcement on Twitter was, shall we say, not positive. It’s worth noting, however, that Creation may be in a difficult spot when it comes to STLV. Twitter user Little Red Fox Cosplay explained it well in an excellent thread: “What I see happening here is conventions are waiting until the choice is taken from them before they cancel. It may seem irresponsible to you, but it is honestly the safest move they can make if you want to see conventions coming back in 2021.”

Such a move for the Star Trek Las Vegas Convention would potentially make sense, especially as there are indications from some local politicians that they are eager to see Las Vegas reopen for business. Last week, Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodwin made headlines when she appeared in an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, calling for casinos, hotels and restaurants to reopen (even though she technically has no jurisdiction over The Strip). If The Strip were to reopen in time for STLV to take place, then Creation Entertainment may be faced with simply trying to recoup as much of their costs as possible.

Whether any Star Trek fans will actually be willing to make the journey remains to be seen.
