Dive deep into iconic visual effects like the bat’leth and Borg cube with new book Star Trek: The Artistry of Dan Curry, now available
DECEMBER 1, 2020 - Star Trek: The Artistry of Dan Curry from Titan Books is now available for purchase. Written by Curry with the help of Star Trek expert Ben Robinson, the long-awaited book explores the art and visual effects created by Star Trek artist Dan Curry and his team throughout the 1990s.
Despite the book’s focus on the TNG-through-Enterprise era, Curry’s work on Star Trek goes back a bit further than the 90s: Curry designed the title sequence for Star Trek IV: The One with the Whales. He was quite busy in the 1980’s, as well, serving as the title designer for popular films like Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Three Amigos, Top Gun, and the Rodney Dangerfield-led film Back to School, which featured a young Terry Farrell.
Daily Star Trek News had a chance to speak with Curry on fellow Roddenberry Podcast Mission Log Live last December. Along with deep discussion into Curry’s time working on Star Trek, the subject of his book came up and Curry was eager to share his thoughts on the writing process. Calling co-author Ben Robinson “wonderful”, Curry said, “Ben’s been super patient and he’s an experienced writer where I’m a novice. With Ben’s guidance and graciousness, it was a wonderful experience.”
The new book won’t simply be an example of Curry’s past work. In fact, he created many new drawings and schematics to help readers better understand the actual process of creating the effects audiences see onscreen. “I did a lot of special illustrations,” Curry said, “things like showing how [...] to make blowing up a model look like it happens in zero gravity and stuff like that. It’s written [...] so that it didn’t get too technical with how things were done, but it does give [you] an idea of some of the wacko approaches we used to accomplish things before everything was done on the computer.”
Star Trek: The Artistry of Dan Curry is available just in time for the holidays and can be purchased through Amazon.com or wherever you buy your books.
