Doug Jones Wonders Who Will Get the Captain’s Chair in Star Trek: Discovery Season Three

At the Saturn Awards last week, Collider interviewed Star Trek: Discovery actor Doug Jones on the red carpet. Unsurprisingly, Jones couldn’t say much about what to expect in Discovery season three, but he did drop some hints about the Federation and the future of the Discovery’s crew.

Jones acknowledged that since we’re going so far into the future, there’s a lot we don’t know. For instance, does the Federation still exist? He said, “What condition is the Federation in? We don't know yet. We're gonna find out when we land.”

He also recalled that last we saw, command of Discovery was up for grabs. It seems as though we might start season three much as we started season two, with Saru as Acting Captain. Jones said, “What happens to me and my rank? I'm a commander, but I'm also acting captain of the ship because we've lost all our captains now. I take the ship and so do I get to keep the captain's chair?”

Then Jones let slip an idea that is sure to have Star Trek fans wagging their chins for weeks. He said, “Do I have to give [command] away to another Federation Starfleet captain in the future? We’re going to find out all that when we get there.”

Jones said that they are about a third of the way through filming season three right now.

The cast and producers of Star Trek: Discovery are due to appear on the main stage at New York Comic Con on October 5th, and at the Paley Center for Media’s PaleyFest later that evening.
