JULY 13, 2021 - The next Star Trek film has a director.

Matt Shakman, the newly Emmy-nominated director of Disney’s WandaVision, has been tapped to direct the next Star Trek film, according to a report from Deadline earlier today. Shakman’s film is planned for a June 2023 release from J.J. Abrams’ production company Bad Robot.

With plenty of experience in the world of television, Shakman comes to the Star Trek franchise having never directed a feature film before. Previous directing credits include a range of shows including Fargo, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Game of Thrones. No stranger to award nominations, his recent work on WandaVision earned him a 2021 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

Shakman’s Star Trek film will be written by veteran writers Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, and is the first film in the franchise to be written by women. Back in March, Deadline reported that Star Trek: Discovery writer Kalinda Vazquez had been asked to write a Star Trek film, also to be produced under the Bad Robot flag. There has been no word yet as to whether or not Vazquez is attached to the upcoming Shakman-directed feature.

For now, no other production details have been announced, and the casting of the film remains unclear, including whether Kelvin Timeline stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto or Karl Urban will be attached.
