GUEST POST: Podcaster Daniel Reyes Has Questions About STAR TREK. Lots of Them.
DECEMBER 15, 2023 - We’ve featured TrekCasTNG’s clever memes on nearly every edition of our Meme Review Monday. One of the co-hosts, Daniel Reyes, has some burning questions that must be answered. Perhaps you can help him?
We all get random intrusive thoughts. Do Transformers have to stop for gas when in vehicle mode? Does Godzilla roar or is that Godzilla language? And exactly Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?
Picking at these threads is the backbone of internet discourse. It’s not an obsession, is it? No, clearly not. But when you love something, you want to know more about it. At least that’s what I’m telling myself.
As a major Star Trek fan and co-host of a Star Trek podcast, Trekcast, I find myself thinking about Trek quite a bit. So here’s a list of my top five unanswered Star Trek questions.
How did the Sisko family get a restaurant?
Famously, there isn’t supposed to be money in the Earth of Star Trek. But Captain Ben Sisko’s father Joseph Sisko owns Sisko’s Creole Kitchen. How did Joseph get it? Was it grandfathered in from the past? Meaning, the family has owned the restaurant for generations and Joseph is keeping it up, sort of like Chateau Picard.
Did Joseph have to go to some government office, fill out paperwork and request restaurant ownership?
Is Neelix a (censored)?
I don’t want to use the actual word here but. Neelix was a grown adult and had a girlfriend who was 2 years old. Granted, Kes was an Ocampa, and they had much shorter lifespans. But still, it’s weird, right? Let’s not get too into this.
If Replicator, why Restaurant?
If your refrigerator had unlimited free food with all your favorite foods, you only needed to ask like some sort of magical genie, would you ever go to a restaurant? Me either. Now, I’ve seen some discussions that perhaps the difference between replicator food and restaurant food is the difference between frozen meals and gourmet. Sure, you could ask for a pizza, but wouldn’t high-end quality pizza be better than frozen?
Is there a Starfleet Academy Band or Orchestra?
It’s amazing how many crew members on these starships are also musicians. But as far as I can recall, I don’t remember anyone talking about playing in the Starfleet Academy Band or Orchestra. The United States Naval Academy has an Orchestra; why shouldn’t Starfleet?
Porthos should have been Trip’s dog instead of Archer’s.
This really isn’t a question. More of a minor critique. Trip seems like the kind of person who would have loved a dog and would want to take his buddy to Space with him. Also, think about the hilarity of trying to hide the dog in engineering for a few episodes.
These are just a few of the questions I have about Star Trek. If you have any answers to this list hit me up on our Trekcast social media accounts. We’re just about everywhere and our DMs are open.
