OCTOBER 31, 2O22 - Earlier this month, during New York Comic Con, we covered a panel of IDW creators, which discussed upcoming comic book titles, one of which, the new ongoing Star Trek, dropped its first issue last week. TrekMovie has a preview with some cover and page images, as well as an interview with the writers.

Star Trek is set in the period between the return of the USS Voyager and the events of Star Trek: Nemesis. According to the synopsis, "Star Trek #1 weaves an epic and unprecedented adventure story that spans the far reaches of the Star Trek multiverse, bringing together characters from across the galaxy—and all eras and variations of the beloved franchise—who must band together to prevent the mysterious murder of the gods.

It’s stardate 2378, and Benjamin Sisko has finally returned from the Bajoran Wormhole omnipotent. But his godhood is failing with every minute. Sent by the Prophets on a mission to the deepest parts of space aboard the U.S.S. Theseus, he witnesses the unthinkable: Someone is killing the gods. And only Sisko and his motley crew of Starfleet members from every era of Trek can stop them."

The mix of franchise characters is evident on the various covers of the first issue, which include not only Benjamin Sisko, but also such other legacy characters as Dr. Beverly Crusher and Data.

Star Trek is written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, with art by Ramon Rosanas. Kelly said of the return of Sisko, “He is the one captain with unfinished business very much. And like that was something that we really wanted to unpack. Janeway is getting her second run in Prodigy, which is wonderful and great; it’s time for Sisko to get some of that love. And he still has so much story to tell, and we absolutely need to unpack it.”

The writers also spoke about the legacy characters, which also include Jean-Luc Picard and Tom Paris, as well as the new characters and the series’ forward-looking, rather than a merely nostalgic, backward-looking story. Lanzing said, “Star Trek at this point is just a huge and diverse line of not just series or timelines, but characters. And getting to use any and all of them in a big mix and match grab-bag Avengers[-type] book is a dream come true for us as creators, and certainly would be a dream come true for us as Star Trek fans. So I really hope that the fans dig in, find that character that they’re really excited about, and start to follow that story.”

Issue #1 of Star Trek is available now wherever you buy your comics.
