INTERVIEW: Listener Anne on blindness in Star Trek and her experience as a fan

Listener Anne talks to Alison Pitt of Daily Star Trek News about blindness in Star Trek

NOVEMBER 28, 2021 - Listener Anne and I have been talking about her experiences as a blind Star Trek fan, so I invited her for a discussion about her experiences, what she thinks about how Star Trek treats disabilities (particularly blindness) and what she would consider a good depiction of blindness in Star Trek. She also told me about what she does to help her enjoy Star Trek as a blind person.

In the course of the discussion, Anne told me about a service she uses: Aira, a professional assistance service. We also talk at length about audio description in Star Trek; you can find a list of Paramount+ audio descriptive tracks at the Audio Description Project’s website (sadly, classic Trek is currently lacking).
