Makeup Designer James MacKinnon Teases Star Trek: Picard Season 3's Updated Makeup
SEPTEMBER 30, 2022 - So much was happening on Star Trek Day earlier this month, and the stories are still making their way to us. On Tuesday, TrekMovie shared a conversation they had with James MacKinnon, the Emmy-winning makeup designer who worked on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: First Contact. MacKinnon has also worked on Star Trek: Picard and Discovery, which generated some of his Emmys.
In his chat with TrekMovie, MacKinnon reflected on the good old days of foam latex, his favorite bits of season two of Picard (the Borg Queen), and what’s coming up in Picard’s third and final season.
Probably one of the most striking visuals from the upcoming season is the aging Worf, and MacKinnon said of reuniting with Michael Dorn, “Just to be able to recreate and elevate Michael Westmore’s makeup from DS9 to a current-day version with Michael Dorn was a true, true pleasure.” He also went into some detail comparing working with foam latex versus silicone.
But when asked about makeup challenges for season 3, he must have been pretty excited when he said, “I can’t say much more about the looks, but you guys are going to be sh***ing your pants when you see what I can’t talk about.”
Until that happens, though, you can read the entire interview at TrekMovie, stay up-to-date with the release schedule on DSTN’s FAQ page, and catch up on the first two seasons of Picard on Paramount+. Season 3 premieres on February 16, 2023.
And be sure to stock up on bathroom tissue.
