NOVEMBER 4, 2021 - It has been almost two years since Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Counselor Deanna Troi, Marina Sirtis, was devastated by the loss of her husband, actor and musician Michael Lamper. Sirtis and Lamper had married in 1992. Now Sirtis is looking back on the beginning of their marriage, in an interview with the Daily Express.

Sirtis and Lamper had been living in Los Angeles, and Sirtis continued to live there alone with her dogs after Lamper’s death, until she announced in March 2020 that she was moving back to the UK. She initially said that she was moving for the professional opportunities, then later supplemented that after the January 6 insurrection by saying that she "can't be in [America] anymore". Now she admits to the Daily Express that the loss of her husband was a factor too, saying, “It was just too much. We were together for 31 years. Married for 27 years. It was just too painful to stay. Too many memories. Everywhere I went there was a memory."

Sirtis did mention that her Star Trek: The Next Generation castmates supported her after Lamper’s death. "When Michael died there were people who said they loved me and people who really loved me. My cast they didn't just say the words, they actually came through for me. They were brilliant."

Anyone who has experienced Sirtis off screen – on convention panels, for example, or in an autograph line – is likely to know her quick wit. And despite her sadness over her loss, she was able to reminisce with a sense of humor. According to the Express, Sirtis told the story of jokingly declining Lamper’s marriage proposal, saying, “When I first met him and he asked me to marry him I said, 'No I can't marry you because your jeans are smaller than mine. I've got to fatten you up first before I marry you.’"
