Michelle Yeoh on How Star Trek: Discovery Helped Her Land a Role in Last Christmas
Galactic badass Michelle Yeoh is one of the stars of the upcoming film Last Christmas. Last Christmas, which also stars Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke and Yeoh’s Crazy Rich Asians co-star Henry Golding, opens this weekend in the US and Canada.
In a new interview in Forbes, Yeoh talked about becoming “Santa”, her character in the film, the owner of a year-round Christmas shop and boss of Clarke’s Kate. Yeoh describes Santa as “this funny character, this charming, lovable but straightforward hardworking woman.” She named herself “Santa” because her shop’s patrons can’t pronounce her Chinese name.
When asked whether her foray in to comedy was planned, Yeoh said, “No, this was nothing I planned.” In fact, Star Trek was partly to blame. While Yeoh was filming Star Trek: Discovery in Toronto, the film’s director, Paul Feig, was also filming A Simple Favor there with Golding. Golding introduced Yeoh to Feig, and they hit it off.
Yeoh said that at the beginning of 2018, Feig called her and asked her to play the character of Santa. Yeoh explained, “He told me and so did Emma [Thompson, the film’s writer] that I was the first person that Paul cast.”
The rest of the Forbes interview covers several topics, including what it was like working with one of the stars of Game of Thrones, what Yeoh does for the Christmas holidays, and, of course, her thoughts on George Michael’s music, which is infused throughout the film. Yeoh said, “Those songs are timeless.”
One thing that’s not in the interview, though: spoilers about Star Trek: Discovery or the upcoming Section 31-related spinoff. When asked what the latest was, Yeoh whispered, “I don’t know if I’m allowed to talk about it. All I can say is, we’re working on it.” She acknowledged later that it’s tricky doing interviews because of her involvement in top-secret projects, which includes not just Star Trek, but also her role in the upcoming Avatar sequels. “I’d be in so much trouble if I leaked anything,” she said. “Just wait and see. It’ll be worth the wait.”
Last Christmas is out in theaters this weekend in the US and Canada, and November 15th in the UK. Michelle Yeoh is currently filming Star Trek: Discovery season three, expected to premiere in late 2020.
