Michelle Yeoh thinks Star Trek producers have “more things in store” for Emperor Georgiou
APRIL 29, 2021 - According to Star Trek: Discovery’s Michelle Yeoh, there could be plans to bring her character, Emperor Georgiou, back to the Star Trek universe. Speaking on Star Trek: The Pod Directive, the official Star Trek podcast, Yeoh discussed the arc of the Georgiou character, teasing audiences once again of her return. TrekMovie.com helpfully summarized the interview in an article on their website.
Spoiler alert!
In the Star Trek: Discovery season three episode “Terra Firma, Part 2”, Georgiou leaves the known universe by passing through the portal known as the Guardian of Forever, meaning she could turn up anywhere, any time. In the interview, Yeoh said, “We all know that the portal is to weigh you and really it is to see if you deserve a second chance. [...] For me it’s like saying ‘Goodbye, until we meet again.’ Because this is Star Trek. Who knows?” Noting that the Guardian of Forever told Georgiou that she has “another journey to undertake”, Yeoh said “I think there’s so [many] more possibilities for Georgiou. And I know my executive producers and showrunners and writers have a lot more things in store for such an amazing character.”
But what will those things be? Yeoh’s character was set to lead a “Section 31” spinoff series after her departure from Star Trek: Discovery. With a team of writers assembled as early as November of 2019, the series was rumored to begin filming in May of 2020, but it never happened. Nearly a year after that report, Paramount+ programming chief Julie McNamara said that while “conversations'' were still being had about a Section 31 series, fans are unlikely to see a new Star Trek series debut until at least one of the five series currently in production is cancelled.
