Michelle Yeoh Wins Historic SAG Award
MARCH 1, 2023 – Since 1986, Michelle Yeoh has been receiving award nominations and has won many, including several Best Actress awards. With the latest one, however, she makes history.
Variety reported on Sunday that Yeoh had won the Screen Actors Guild Award for best performance by a female actor in a leading role, recognizing her work in the 2022 film, Everything Everywhere All at Once. This made her the first Asian woman to win a leading film acting award. This year was also the first time that women of color were in the majority among the best actress nominees.
Accepting the award, Yeoh said, “I think if I speak my heart will explode. SAG- AFTRA, to get this from you who understand what it is to get here… every one of you know the journey, the roller coaster ride, the ups and downs. But most importantly we never give up. I thank you. This is not just for me, this is for every little girl who looks like me.”
Some of her other, more recent awards, all for best actress, have come from the Hollywood Critics Association, the Music City Film Critics Association, the Online Film Critics Society, and the Vancouver Film Critics Circle.
As if being Icon of the Year wasn’t enough. Oh, but there is also her current nomination for Best Actress at this year’s Academy Awards….
Call her Evelyn Wang or Emperor Georgiou, Michelle Yeoh continues to amaze.
