Nana Visitor's Book, A Woman's Trek, Finds A New Publisher
JULY 7, 2023 – Since Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s Nana Visitor announced her book on women and Star Trek, some vicissitudes have delayed its publication, including the demise of the publisher. Now the book is back on track with a new publisher, Insight Editions.
In Star Trek: Open a Channel: A Woman's Trek, according to the book’s distributor, Simon & Schuster, Visitor “explores how the series has portrayed and influenced women. Interviews with the stars, writers, producers, and celebrity fans reveal the struggles and triumphs of women both behind and in front of the camera throughout the sixty-year history of Star Trek, and how they have mirrored the experiences of women everywhere.”
The book reflects Visitor’s own story and goes on to feature women we know on screen as well as fans from many other walks of life telling their own stories. That includes one, Samantha Cristoforetti, who was on board the International Space Station, when Visitor interviewed her.
Insight Editions is known among Star Trek fans for a number of publications, including Dayton Ward’s travel guides to Vulcan and the Klingon Empire, and Star Trek: The Official Guide to the Animated Series, among others.
Visitor’s interviews are also being recorded by 455 Films for a potential documentary.
As of this spring, Visitor was still connecting with fans to hear their stories.
Star Trek: Open a Channel: A Woman's Trek is due out March 12, 2024, and is available now for preorder via Amazon or wherever you buy your books.
