Oregon fan builds faithful replica of Star Trek’s U.S.S. Enterprise bridge in family home
JANUARY 19, 2021 - Oregon-based Star Trek fan Allan Quick has built for himself what most fans only dream of having: his very own replica of the U.S.S. Enterprise bridge. Quick shared the story of his own “five year mission” in “Beings of Oregon”, a recurring feature of The Register Guard out of Eugene, Oregon.
Having grown up watching Star Trek in syndication, Quick admittedly has a special place in his heart for the Enterprise (no bloody A, B, C or D). Ever since he was young, Quick said “The images of the ship, the chair, the lights and colors, have been in my mind.” One day, Quick had the idea to build his own replica of the captain’s chair to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Trek in 2016. Being the die-hard trekkie that he is, he said, "I knew if it wasn’t right, it was going to bug me.”
Quick joined forces with friend Bruce Boyd to build the replica chair. After researching the specifications and multiple trips to Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture to study the real thing on display, they set to work. One captain’s chair isn’t enough, it seems. Quick and Boyd ended up building two replicas of the iconic seat, one for each of them.
The construction didn’t stop there. After building the captain’s chair, Quick also built a two-person transporter platform in 2017. In 2020, he finished construction of a replica of the Enterprise’s navigation console, complete with working lights and authentic sounds. While he was hoping to display his “functional” replicas at the 2020 Eugene Comic Con, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the formal premiere of his creations.
On the brighter side, the Enterprise bridge pieces are on display in a spare bedroom of the Quick family home, much to the delight of his entire family. “These are my childhood memories,” Quick said of his replica. “With all the other things going on around us in this world right now, I can come in here and sit in this chair and imagine I am on the bridge of the Enterprise. This is my happy place.”
