Paramount+ (and Star Trek: Prodigy) heads to Europe, thanks to new ViacomCBS partnership with Sky
AUGUST 5, 2021 - Since the announcement in February that Star Trek: Prodigy would join the rest of the current franchise lineup on Paramount+, overseas fans have been waiting to hear how they will be able to watch this latest animated offering from the Star Trek Universe. Well, the wait is over, at least for residents of the UK, Ireland, Italy and GSA (aka Germany, Switzerland and Austria). ViacomCBS has officially announced a deal to bring Paramount+ to Europe via the entertainment network Sky, as reported on their website.
Raffaele Annecchino, President and Chief Executive Officer of ViacomCBS Networks International, expressed excitement at the multi-year deal, saying, “We are thrilled to expand our long-standing partnership with Sky to continue delivering ViacomCBS’ leading portfolio of premium entertainment brands to Sky customers and importantly bring Paramount+ to new audiences in all Sky markets, including the UK, Ireland, Italy, and GSA.”
The agreement will make Paramount+ available to Sky’s 23 million customers through their Sky Q platform, and subscribers to the premium-level Sky Cinema service will get it at no additional cost. Paramount+ will also be available direct to consumers in these countries through their app available for iOS, Android, and other supported devices.
The press release did not mention Star Trek: Discovery, currently available in Europe on Netflix, or Star Trek: Lower Decks, which streams overseas on Amazon Prime Video, leading some like TrekMovie.com to assume those deals will remain in place. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was also missing from the announcement, so overseas fans will have to wait a bit longer to learn how they will catch the adventures of Captain Pike and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise.
