Paramount Pictures announces new Star Trek film coming in June 2023
APRIL 11, 2021 - Great news, Star Trek fans! The next Star Trek film has an official release date: June 9, 2023. The announcement came from Paramount Studios over the weekend, and was posted to StarTrek.com. This will be the first feature film for the franchise since the 2016 film Star Trek Beyond, directed by Justin Lin.
Over the last year, Paramount has reportedly backed away from several ideas for a new film, including the proposed film from writer and director Noah Hawley, and another from Quentin Tarantino and Mark L. Smith, which would likely have been reminiscent of the TOS “gangster” inspired episode “A Piece of the Action”. The continued uncertainty has likely left many fans wonder when, and if, a new Star Trek film would ever happen.
Aside from having a release date more than two years out, details on the new film are hard to come by. We don’t know the title. We don’t know who will direct the film, or who is producing it. We don’t know anything about the plot, and we don’t know who has been cast, or if casting has even taken place.
Now that we know what we don’t know, let’s focus on what we do know. The announcement of a 2023 release date comes just a few weeks after it was revealed that television writer Kalinda Vazquez was tapped to write a new Star Trek feature film. Vazquez is no stranger to the franchise. Not only has she previously written for both Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Short Treks, her first name, Kalinda, comes right out of the TOS episode “By Any Other Name”. While we haven’t confirmed that the Vazquez script will be the basis for the currently untitled 2023 release, there is definitely evidence to suggest a new Star Trek film is finally on the way.
