Paramount+ releases long-awaited full trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
APRIL 3, 2022 - Well, it’s finally here. After releasing a series of teasers, each one featuring a different crew member from the upcoming Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Paramount+ released a brand new, full-length trailer for the show on Sunday. And it’s a doozy!
As it begins, Captain Pike (Anson Mount) materializes into a meeting hall of some kind, regretfully interrupting the shouting match taking place. From there, we cut to the USS Enteprise, not orbiting the planet, but hovering low in the atmosphere. Next, Pike explains the mission of the starship’s crew, rephrasing Kirk’s famous preamble about new life, new civilization, and strange new worlds.
As the trailer gains momentum, you can hear strains of Star Trek: The Original Series'‘ iconic theme, as played by what sounds like a theremin. In fact, several nods to TOS can be seen, including Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) sporting a large silver earpiece similar to the one Nichelle Nichols wore, and Spock (Ethan Peck) in hand-to-hand combat using a Lirpa in what appears to be the kal-if-fee, a Vulcan battle to the death first seen in the episode “Amok Time.” And is that Vulcan woman he’s kissing T’Pring?
But the trailer’s not all TOS homages. Living up to the series’ name, we get glimpses of new worlds and races, as well as some epic special effects and battle scenes. The trailer leaves some questions, particularly about how the show will fit into canon, but all will be answered when it premieres on Paramount+ on May 5.
