Patrick Stewart confesses interest in a possible Star Trek: Picard film
AUGUST 1, 2022 - While Star Trek: Picard is concluding its run in 2023 with a third and final season featuring the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation, it may not yet be the end of an era. At San Diego Comic-Con in July, lead actor Sir Patrick Stewart told fans he would “love to” be involved in another Star Trek film.
Captain (and sometimes Admiral) Jean Luc Picard led the cast of The Next Generation for 178 episodes across seven seasons from 1987 to 1994. Following the series, four feature films were produced with the TNG cast, including Star Trek: Generations, Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection, and Star Trek: Nemesis. In 2023, fans will see the final season of Picard in what is expected to be the swan song for the TNG cast, and especially Patrick Stewart.
That might not be enough for Stewart, who is now 82 years old and has spent more than 35 years involved with the franchise. Apparently, once you are bitten by the “acting bug”, it leaves an indelible mark.
When asked about the possibility of Picard going on one more big-screen adventure, Stewart responded with enthusiasm, saying, “Yes, I'd love to. I think that would be a very interesting and exciting - and worthwhile - thing to achieve." Understandably, this left many Star Trek fans in attendance very excited at the prospect, even though there has been no official word on whether a “Picard film” will ever be produced.
Stewart went on to discuss a familiar theme, citing the importance of original and progressive storytelling in Star Trek. "We carve out new territory in Picard," Stewart told fans, "and whatever series of Star Trek [...] we are involved with, that is the most essential thing to remember: We are breaking boundaries all the time and reflecting life as it might possibly be."
