REVIEW: Star Trek #15: Glass and Bone Part 3
DECEMBER 22, 2023 – “Prepared to do whatever it takes to make peace with the war-worshipping Tzenkethi and outmaneuver the Romulan Empire as their ally, Captain Sisko and his crew work alongside Tzenkethi warleader Kav’ka and Romulan Magistrex T’Galatheon to ready capitol defenses in preparation for the deadly Festival of Supremacy. But Sisko soon learns that Federation ideals won’t come naturally to the reptilian species that praises survival of the fittest over all. Can Sisko keep his crew alive, impress the Tzenkethi Autarch, and keep the Romulans from convincing warmongers that they reign supreme?”
In issue #15 of Star Trek, a captivating narrative unfolds that skilfully navigates the delicate balance between exposition and action. Captain Sisko and his crew find themselves entangled in a complex diplomatic mission with the Tzenkethi, a war-prone reptilian species. The Romulans' entry into the picture adds a layer of tension, setting the stage for a perilous Festival of Supremacy.
The initial part of the issue delves deep into the intricacies of alliances and conflicts.
While some readers might find the exposition-heavy moments somewhat overwhelming, the latter half of the story unfolds with unexpected twists and high-stakes action, justifying the narrative choices.
A pivotal scene arises in a conversation between Tom Paris and Harry Kim, both former USS Voyager crew members. Writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing expertly infuse the dialogue with nods to older Trek, adding complexity to the characters and evoking a sense of nostalgia for fans. The ensemble cast is deftly handled, with subplots featuring Doctor Crusher and Scotty contributing depth to the overall storyline.
The visual storytelling by artist Marcus To breathes life into the issue, particularly during the intense combat scenes involving the Tzenkethi Coalition. Rounding out the visuals are colourist Lee Lougheridge and letterer Clayton Cowles.
The clash between the Federation and Romulan delegations at the Festival of Supremacy is not only visually striking but also narratively compelling.
The series continues to leverage nostalgia, evident in the heartfelt exchange between Paris and Kim, showcasing a deep understanding of the characters' growth.
Star Trek #15 proves to be a rollercoaster of emotions, seamlessly blending political intrigue, character development, and thrilling action. The issue concludes with a cliffhanger, leaving lives hanging in the balance and paving the way for an eagerly awaited follow-up. Overall, it stands as a testament to the creative team's ability to breathe new life into the series and deliver a captivating instalment within the ongoing “Glass and Bone” arc.
