Seth MacFarlane updates Jimmy Fallon on The Orville season 3 production

Jimmy Fallon and Seth MacFarlane on The Tonight Show

Just like Star Trek: Discovery, fans of Hulu’s Trek-alike sci-fi series The Orville will be getting a season 3 premiere date...eventually. Show creator Seth MacFarlane recently held an interview with Jimmy Fallon from The Tonight Show, discussing the abrupt stop in filming due to COVID-19, working from home and hosting a variety show for charity.

Filming on season three of The Orville was cut short in March of this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. The series creator took a light-hearted approach, saying, “We were right in the middle of shooting an episode of The Orville…When this thing airs at long last, whenever that is, one episode is gonna be such that between one scene and the next, people are suddenly gonna gain twenty pounds and have long, white beards.”

With production of season three on hold and no release date in sight, MacFarlane was still optimistic, saying, “We shot about half of the season and it’s looking amazing.” As far as continuing production on the series, The Orville, like many productions today, is a victim of circumstance. “It depends on when we get back to work,” MacFarlane told Fallon. “It depends on what conditions we get back to work.”

Like many people, MacFarlane is working from home these days, and he has plenty to do.  “I’m getting a lot done,” he explained. “We’ve set up all of these crazy systems where I can edit the show from home. I can record Family Guy and American Dad from home. The technical part of our culture, the way people have stepped up to close these gaps for us is kind of amazing.”

On top of being responsible for three television shows, MacFarlane also currently hosts a nightly program for charity called The At Home Variety Show. MacFarlane described the program to Fallon, saying, “Each installment features a different celebrity who comes in and does their own act of some kind or another. It’s very experimental, very avante garde.” Proceeds from the show contribute to assisting food banks, providing protective gear for healthcare workers and supporting communities of color affected by COVID-19.
