Something Curious Is Happening To the 'Star Trek' Films Streaming On Paramount+
SEPTEMBER 23, 2022 - Paramount+ is now the United States’ primary source for Star Trek franchise. All of the 11 series (if you count Star Trek: Short Treks can be found on the streaming service, as can the 13 films. But, it appears, not for long.
In August we reported that 7 of the films Star Trek II-VI and Star Trek: Generations and Insurrection, would be coming to Amazon Prime. Well, now it appears there’s been another change in their status. Paramount+ has quietly put 9 of the films onto their “Enjoy Before They’re Gone” list. That means that at some point in the (probably) near future, Star Trek: The Motion Picture (both the theatrical and director’s cuts); Star Trek III: The Search For Spock; Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home; Star Trek V: The Final Frontier; Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country; and Star Trek: Generations; Star Trek First Contact; Star Trek Insurrection; and Star Trek: Nemesis will be leaving the streaming service.
This is a puzzling move for a number of reasons. First, it hasn’t been so long since the films were removed from other streaming services to stream exclusively on Paramount’s service. Second, if it were a matter of streaming rights, and Amazon had purchased them back, then Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan would also be on the chopping block with several of the others “safe.”
DSTN contacted Paramount for clarification, but as yet we have not received a response. Please also note that there have been no official announcements about the status of the films from Paramount or any other official source. We’ll keep you apprised as developments occur.
Many thanks to Kim Hansen for putting us onto this story.
