Star Trek: Discovery nominated for Outstanding Drama Series in GLAAD Media Awards
FEBRUARY 1, 2021 - Star Trek: Discovery has been nominated for a GLAAD Media Award in the category of “Outstanding Drama Series”. A report from Deadline detailed the announcement, made during a live event posted to GLAAD’s TikTok. Winners of the 32nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards will be announced during a virtual ceremony in April.
Each year, the GLAAD Media Awards recognize media programming that presents an accurate, inclusive and fair representation of the LGBTQ community and its issues. This will be the second time Star Trek: Discovery has been nominated. The series was nominated last year, but the award ultimately went to the FX series Pose. Discovery’s third season saw the introduction of Gray and Adira, played by transgender actor Ian Alexander and non-binary actor Blu del Barrio, respectively. Both characters were developed in close collaboration with Nick Adams, GLAAD’s Director of Transgender Representation.
Other nominees for “Outstanding Drama Series” include 9-1-1: Lone Star (FOX), Killing Eve (BBC America), P-Valley (Starz), Ratched (Netflix), The Umbrella Academy (Netflix), Supergirl (The CW), Vida (Starz), The Wilds (Amazon Prime Video) and Wynonna Earp (Syfy).
GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis praised this year’s nominees, saying, “During an unprecedented year of crises and isolation, the nominees for the 32nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards reached LGBTQ people with powerful stories and inspired countless others around the world with bold looks at LGBTQ people and issues [...] As GLAAD continues to lead the fight for LGBTQ acceptance, this year’s nominees remind us that even in times of political and cultural division, diverse LGBTQ representation and visibility can enlighten, entertain, and create lasting change.”
With more than two months until the winners are announced, there’s plenty of time to catch up on Star Trek: Discovery. Season three is available to stream in full on CBS All Access.
