Star Trek earns 6 Emmy nominations: 5 for Picard and 1 for Short Treks
Star Trek is on the Emmys shortlist. Yesterday, the Television Academy announced the nominations for the 72nd Annual Emmy Awards, revealing 6 nominations for the Star Trek franchise. Five of those nominations are for the crew of Star Trek: Picard with the sixth belonging to Star Trek: Short Treks.
In May of this year, TrekMovie.com reported that CBS began promoting the two Star Trek series with emphasis in securing a nomination for Sir Patrick Stewart as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. While Stewart wasn’t nominated for the Emmy, the creative staff of Star Trek: Picard will be getting plenty of attention with their five nominations in the following categories.
First up are the nominations for Outstanding Period and/or Character Hairstyling and Outstanding Period and/or Character (non-prosthetic) Makeup. Both nominations are for the Picard episode “Stardust City Rag”. The third nomination is for Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup for a Series, Limited Series, Movie or Special for the episode “Absolute Candor”. The remaining two nominations are both for the Star Trek: Picard finale “Et in Arcadia Ego: Part 2”. Those are in the categories of Outstanding Sound Mixing and Outstanding Sound Editing for a Comedy or Drama Series.
The five nominations for Star Trek: Picard are the most any Star Trek property has seen in a single year since the final season of Star Trek: Voyager, which saw eight nominations in 2001. It also means that Picard steps up as the most successful Star Trek series to date for CBS All Access in terms of single-year Emmy nominations, pulling in one more than Star Trek: Discovery did in 2018.
The final Star Trek Emmy nomination this year is for Star Trek: Short Treks. That series earned itself the Emmy nomination for Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama Series. The Short Treks nomination plus the other five for Picard means the franchise is in great standing for this year’s ceremony. The 2020 Primetime Emmy Awards will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmell and are currently scheduled to air September 20th on ABC.
