DECEMBER 17, 2020 - It’s finally happened! We have a broadcast date for Star Trek: Lower Decks outside of the United States.

A piece from StarTrek.com dropped the news early yesterday morning: Amazon Prime Video will be the new home of Lower Decks in multiple territories including Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Japan, India and more. The entirety of season one will be available to stream from Friday, January 22nd, 2021.

The production schedule for Star Trek: Lower Decks was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, which threw distribution off-schedule for both the United States and elsewhere. Back in August, when the premiere of the show was imminent on CBS All Access, Showrunner Mike McMahan told the podcast How to Kill an Hour, “I want everyone in the world to be able to see this show...CBS wants all you guys to see it too.” At the time, he said the reason for the delay was “squarely because of [COVID-19].” He pointed out that the Lower Decks premiere in the U.S. got shifted two months’ earlier than expected, and that “other groups” couldn’t move as quickly, hence the delay.

Fast-forward to yesterday, when McMahan was finally able to announce a long-overdue resolution for international audiences. He posted on Twitter, “I finally get to share the good news! All 10 episodes of #StarTrekLowerDecks is coming to Amazon @PrimeVideo [...] on January 22!”

It’s not entirely clear exactly which territories are included in the announcement (StarTrek.com just said “and more”), but at least we can now say that the international ball is rolling.
