Star Trek: Picard Makes a Nielsen Top Ten List

APRIL 17, 2023 – The Nielsen ratings have been around for a long time, collecting data on television viewing habits. The ratings have been produced in the US since the 1950-51 TV season, and they have adapted since then to the changing formats and technologies available for viewing and data collection. In 2020, Nielsen launched a weekly top ten list of the most popular shows on streaming platforms. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, a Star Trek show has beamed onto one of the multiple top ten streaming lists.

Star Trek: Picard made its first appearance in a streaming top ten for the week of March 13-19. That week was also a first for the number of different platforms represented in the various top ten lists, at seven.

Picard came in at number nine on the list for original series, with 310 million minutes of viewing time. The winner that week was Netflix’s You, at 1,202 million minutes. (That series topped the overall top ten as well; Nielsen also tracks top ten streaming lists for acquired series and movies.)

While streaming data was first collected from Amazon Prime and Netflix, the platforms now included in the ratings are Amazon Prime, AppleTV+, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Paramount+, Peacock and Netflix. The first Paramount+ original series to make that top ten list was 1923, two weeks earlier than Picard.

One has to wonder how many million minutes will be spent watching the final episode of Star Trek: Picard this week….
