Star Trek: Picard’s Sir Patrick Stewart wins Critics Choice Super Award for Best Actor in a Science Fiction/Fantasy series

JANUARY 11, 2021 - Sir Patrick Stewart has won a notable award for his acting skills in Star Trek: Picard.
On Sunday night, the inaugural Critics Choice Super Awards took place in a special presentation broadcast on The CW. The Critics Choice Super Awards is a new event from the organizers of the annual Critics Choice Awards; the Super Awards are designed specifically to recognize film and television genres such as science fiction and fantasy, action, horror and animation.
Stewart won the award for Best Actor in a Science Fiction/Fantasy series. He beat out fellow nominees Robbie Amell (Amazon’s Upload), Travis Fimmel (HBO Max’s Raised by Wolves), Sam Heughan (Starz’s Outlander), Kayvan Novak (FX’s What We Do in the Shadows), Pedro Pascal (Disney+’s The Mandalorian) and Nick Offerman (Hulu’s Devs). While Star Trek shows were nominated for a total of six Critics Choice Super Awards, Stewart was the only winner.

The win is significant for Stewart, and for Star Trek fans. According to his record on IMDb, while Stewart is arguably best-known for his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, it’s a role he is rarely recognized for at an award level. Before the Super Awards, he was only nominated a total of 10 times for Star Trek performances, winning two. He’s been nominated for a total of seven Golden Globe or Emmy Awards, but never for Star Trek.
Other winners at Sunday’s Critics Choice Super Awards included Hulu and NEON’s Palm Springs and Disney+’s Soul, which took home three awards each in film categories, and Amazon’s The Boys, which earned four in series categories. As a studio or network, Netflix took home an impressive five wins.
