'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Season 2 Trailer Features Kirk, Klingons, Kane, and Even Some Things That Don't Begin With 'K'
APRIL 19, 2023 - With a mere 8 weeks to go before Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 is available on Paramount+, we’ve finally gotten a trailer. Many fans expected it 2 weeks ago, on April 5, known in the Trek community as First Contact Day and a traditional day filled with announcements and goodies. But there was radio silence on the subject, apart from the release of a series of new poster art.
The timing of the trailer release coming so close to the final episode of Star Trek: Picard may not be a coincidence. It’s probable that Paramount left it until today in an effort to keep it from being diluted by the hype of the hotly-anticipated series finale. Now that the day is upon us, they want to keep the Star Trek buzz going with the next exciting thing.
The trailer leans heavily into some comic beats, including La’an’s new crush, Spock’s new catchphrase, and Kirk’s first experience with a revolving door. Other highlights include our first glimpse of Carol Kane as Pelia, Spock guzzling some blood wine (we assume) with the Klingons, and Ortegas’ fancy flying.
The backup track that begins midway through the trailer is “Such Great Heights” by American indie band The Postal Service. It’s been rare, though not unheard of, for Star Trek to use modern music, and it gives the trailer a pop feel that belies the science fiction action happening on the screen. The lyrics used say, “I am thinking it’s a sign that the freckles in our eyes are mirror images…” Could they give a clue to how the season might begin?
