It’s not just official Star Trek who is making a difference this week: so is the Star Trek community at large.

The Star Trek subreddit, r/StarTrek, is asking its community of nearly 250,000 Trekkies to contribute to the ACLU or a similar fund. In a post Tuesday, they said, “The mod team of /r/StarTrek would like to invite all of our subscribers (with the means to) to join us in making a donation of $47 to the ACLU. We wanted to do something more than just an empty gesture, so all 8 of us pitched in to make a donation of $47.” They went on to say, “Feel free to use the comments to share your receipts and hopefully we can encourage others to pitch in and help preserve Federation ideals.”

The $47 suggested donation is a reference to the unofficial official number of Star Trek, 47, which turns up repeatedly (and deliberately) in Star Trek episodes, films and even soft canon like books and comics.

TrekMovie.com led the charge Tuesday, pledging to pool their $47 donations. Daily Star Trek News has also made a donation to Black Lives Matter, and you should donate too. Please consider joining with other Trekkies in supporting the ACLU, the Black Lives Matter movement and other charities supporting Black voices and the protesters across the United States.

In the Star Trek future, there’s no room for intolerance. Do your part. We’re all in this together.
