Terry Matalas teases Brent Spiner's "new old" character and a possible Star Trek: Picard spinoff
AUGUST 31, 2022 - In a follow-up to our August 18th report, Terry Matalas teases some new details about Star Trek: Picard season 3, the PIC showrunner teases us with a few more tidbits, this time about the mysterious character that Brent Spiner will be playing, and his hopes for a spinoff series.
Earlier at Comic-Con, executive producer Alex Kurtzman said Spiner plays a “new old” character. Matalas shared with those in attendance why Spiner’s ‘mystery’ character was the only one who didn’t get a special character poster at Comic-Con:
“Brent’s character is specifically tied into the plot and the mythology in ways that if you were to show a poster, you would have a thousand more questions. And I think you want to earn it. But he plays a new old character that you have seen and never seen before. it’s, we think, a great way to do this that honors what has come before yet treads new ground.”
He also explained that the team feels Spiner’s character is best revealed within the show itself, stating that the way the character plays itself out will be progressive. When the character is revealed, you’ll think you know who it is, but won’t be quite certain if you’re correct. The answer to who he will be is not quite clear for a bit. (This particular journalist is wondering if it will be a repurposed character that we’ve seen B 4.)
He further promises that we’ll all be glad that we learned who he is while watching, rather than already knowing going in. Going further, he admits that he let his inner ‘fan boy’ put in some very specific Star Trek: The Next Generation easter eggs just for the fans.
“There are aspects of season 3, where if you don’t know certain parts of Next Gen, yeah, that scene is not going to be for you. We always try and give context, but I didn’t really want to dumb it down. There were moments like ‘That one’s for the fans.’ And if you’re confused, you’re welcome to Google that character later and you’ll enjoy many episodes of greatness you can go back and watch.”
As to a spinoff series, he went back to a comment Alex Kurtzman made of two new Star Trek series in development and confirmed that a PIC spinoff is not currently one of them, but, as fans of Star Trek: Discovery season 2 pretty much demanded a Captain Pike spinoff series, he hopes that there will be a similar outcome after season 3 of PIC.
