The 7 most inventive Star Trek technologies, according to ASME

Star Trek transporter tech is a no-go, says ASME

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers has published an infographic about the 7 most inventive technologies of Star Trek.

The infographic features familiar Trek tech such as communicators, phasers, the universal translator, and more. Each technology includes a brief explanation of how it works on the show, and how it works (or doesn’t) in real life. Of course, as it’s an infographic, it’s enhanced by high-quality artwork from the show and laid out in an easy-to-use format.

Some fun facts from the infographic:

  • With regards to phaser technology: “The military has spent decades trying to develop laser weapons. Recently, a defense contractor demonstrated a laser cannon that can disable UAVs [or unmanned aerial vehicles].”

  • With regards to warp drive: “Faster-than-light technology has been a staple of science fiction for decades, and theoretical physicists have proposed any number of possible ways to accomplish it. But as of today, there’s no known way to beat the light-speed limit.”

  • And finally, with regards to transporters: “Uh, nope. Not going to happen.”

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, or ASME, is a non-profit professional society that it says “enables collaboration, knowledge sharing, career enrichment, and skills development across all engineering disciplines, toward a goal of helping the global engineering community develop solutions to benefit lives and livelihoods.” The society was founded in 1880 and now boasts over 100,000 members across the globe.
