The Official Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season Two Trailer Drops
MAY 26, 2023 - Last week a teaser trailer was prematurely released, giving fans of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds a glimpse of Season 2, but now a full trailer has officially been released by Paramount+ and it delivers far more than the teaser.
The biggest takeaway from the teaser was a brief glimpse of Ensigns Beckett Mariner and Brad Boimler in live action form. The snippet showed the characters, played in both animated and live action by Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid, at a distance standing on a transporter pad. The new trailer shows them in close up and with dialogue.
In and interview with SFX Magazine, Strange New Worlds showrunner and co-creator Akiva Goldsman discussed the difficulty of translating an animated character to live action.
“It's difficult to integrate anime with non-anime because tonally they're different,” he said. “Really, it's a credit to Tawny and Jack, because the way you play a character in animation and the way you play a character in live action requires a different level, a different sort of modulation of performance.”
Goldsman noted that because the animated versions of the characters have limited details in the facial expressions, the actors have to fill in gaps with their vocal performances. This isn’t the case in live action.
“That's just an example of how wildly different the kind of acting you do in a voice booth is from the kind of acting you do on-screen," he said. "It's really translation, more than I think any of us do.”
There are some other minor spoilers in the trailer as well, so be warned. One thing fans will notice is that Number One is back on the bridge. The character, played by Rebecca Romijn, ended Season 1 in Starfleet custody because she had hidden the fact that she was a genetically modified Illyrian. Seeing her on the bridge in the trailer, lets us know that Capt. Christopher Pike was able to secure her release somehow.
Sharp eyed fans will also spot a brief flash of reptilian tale in one quick sequence of the trailer. This confirms comments made this spring by Goldsman that the Gorn will return in Season 2. It remains to be seen if we will get an explanation as to why the Gorn of Strange New Worlds are so different from the one encountered by Capt. James Kirk in the original Star Trek series.
Speaking of Kirk, it looks like we will be seeing more of him as well. There has been some debate over how well Kirk and Pike knew each other based on a line of dialogue from the original series, but it appears they are going to bump into each other at least once more in Season 2.
And then there are the Klingons. The trailer shows us that Spock will be spending some time with the Klingons, taking in some of their traditions and delicacies. What isn’t explained is why he’s there or why they look like Next Generation era Klingons as opposed to TOS or Discovery era Klingons.
You can check out the trailer below, but for now, it looks like fans will have to wait for answers until June 15 when Season 2 officially begins.
