The Wand Company announces new “fully functional” Star Trek tricorder replica
Picture this: assembled with your fellow crew members on the transporter pad, the commanding officer says “energize” and you beam down to an unknown planet, on assignment to document what you find there. The tools you’re carrying? One Starfleet communicator, a phaser and of course, your tricorder.
As one of the most celebrated and recognizable gadgets in the Star Trek universe, tricorders are well-known for their abilities to scan and identify just about anything you can think of. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to have your own tricorder, you don’t have to wait until the 23rd century to find out.
Earlier this week, The Wand Company, makers of the world’s first magic wand universal remote control, announced the June 2021 release of a long-awaited tricorder, finally completing their “landing party” set. According to The Wand Company’s website they “have received an enormous number of messages from fans around the world” who have asked for the replica’s production following their previous releases of the widely popular Bluetooth Communicator and Star Trek Phaser universal remote control (no longer in production), both of which are based on detailed 3D scans of authentic Original Series props.
But what makes it tick? The Wand Company says this will be a “fully functional” tricorder and although it won’t do everything you’ve seen it do on Star Trek, it will be programmed to gather and store information. This includes scanning radio frequencies and recording audio, along with sensors for monitoring environmental data, giving the user an authentic “away mission” experience. The tricorder will feature a full-color LCD display and more details about its capabilities will be released later this year.
The new tricorder is likely going to cost you around $250. It’s not yet available for pre-order, but you can register your interest. Registering now gives you priority when pre-ordering does become available, and it also signs you up for email updates. When you register, you’ll get a numbered certificate indicating your registration, and you can even personalize the certificate with a “Starfleet” name of your choice.
