Anson Mount Gets Political in Series of Tweets
In a break from his summer social media hiatus, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds star Anson Mount took to X (formerly known as Twitter) on June 28 to voice his concerns about the U.S. Presidential election.
Mount, known for his portrayal of Captain Christopher Pike, used a series of candid tweets to address the nation's political landscape, expressing deep apprehensions about the potential outcomes.
“Breaking my hiatus to offer one thing: The denialism has to come to an end. We are talking about the far-reaching future of our nation. If Trump regains office, have no doubt that effective Justice and free elections will be the first targets…,” Mount began, setting a serious tone.
His tweets continued with a stark warning: “... along with the nullification of any Supreme Court oversight that still exists. Biden’s speech patterns are an exact overlay of my own experience watching members of my own family who have entered the early to mid stages of cognitive decline…”
Mount’s remarks struck a personal chord, highlighting his discomfort in making such statements. “Writing this is not fun, and it gives me no joy to be piling on what is undoubtedly a difficult moment for a good man and his family. Also, I’m pretty sure this is going to anger many who read this post… For that I am sorry but I can only say what I believe and the time to keep mouths shut has ended. This race and, by extension, the future of our nation, are too important. It is not too late to choose a different path and that decision should be made sooner than later.”
Mount’s bold commentary quickly sparked a flurry of reactions from fans and followers. Some applauded his bravery and candidness, while others criticized him for stepping into the political fray.
One user tweeted, “Anson Mount speaking out like this is exactly what we need. More public figures using their platforms for the greater good. #BravoAnson.”
Conversely, another fan expressed disappointment: “I watch Star Trek to escape from politics. Seeing Anson Mount get political is disheartening. Just stick to acting, please.”
Supporters argued that public figures have a responsibility to use their influence for societal betterment, while critics felt that actors should remain within the confines of their professional expertise.
This incident underscores the increasing trend of celebrities stepping into political discourse, leveraging their platforms to voice opinions on pressing national issues. As the nation inches closer to the Presidential election, voices like Mount's may become more prevalent, reflecting a broader societal shift towards political engagement and activism among public figures.
