Brent Spiner Talks About Talking To Himself in STAR TREK: PICARD

Spiner, renowned for his role as the beloved android Data, returned to Star Trek: Picard with the added complexity of playing a new android character alongside Data. This narrative choice demanded Spiner to engage in scenes with himself, acting as both characters simultaneously. "There were times in that scene... where I would leave the frame as one character and literally come in the other side of the frame as the other character," Spiner recounted, shedding light on the technical and creative demands of these sequences.

The process was as challenging as it was fascinating. To facilitate these scenes, a stand-in scene partner was used for Spiner to interact with, though the real magic came from Spiner's ability to switch between characters fluidly, without the aid of cuts. 

"The camera was moving and I was moving and I would just be the other person," he explained. 

This method required precise coordination and a deep understanding of each character's motivations and distinct personality traits.

Spiner's approach to differentiating the characters hinged on their intentions and emotional states. Despite the absence of visual cues like props to distinguish them, Spiner navigated this complexity through nuanced performance, ensuring that each character remained distinct and recognizable to the audience. 

"It was a question in our minds whether it would be that easy for the audience. I thought it would, but I haven’t seen it, so you tell me," Spiner said, highlighting the collaborative effort to make these scenes comprehensible and impactful.
