Cast and Crew Bid Farewell to Star Trek: Discovery
MARCH 6, 2023 - As we reported last week, Star Trek: Discovery is in its final days, with the announcement that its fifth season will be its last. There have been a variety of reactions, with some fans accepting the inevitability of the decision and others already mourning the loss, while still others see it as a move that is long overdue.
But Star Trek fans aren’t the only ones who were ambushed by last week’s news. The cast of the show is weighing in with their reactions, too. Our Events Coordinator, Marina Kravchuk, was in the audience of a panel discussion with Doug Jones (Saru) on the Star Trek Cruise, where he discussed being warned the announcement was coming that morning:
I’m going to get emotional… I’ve hugged a thousand of you at least… To be in this environment with all the hugs and love has been an absolute treat for me. We had a very tearful Zoom call this morning before the news hit. I was on a Zoom call with our producers and my castmates. So Sonequa [Martin-Green] gives you all of her love. And my co-star Tara Rosling, who plays T’Rina my love interest, she says to tell you to all to “party on.”… So, it’s been an absolute joy, but once in the Star Trek family, always in the Star Trek family.
Anthony Rapp (Stamets), with whom I spoke last month, tweeted his thoughts about the cancellation:
It has been the privilege of a lifetime to join the #StarTrek universe. Thank you to all of you who’ve welcomed us into your hearts. To say that I will miss working with my incredible Disco family is a profound understatement. They’ve made my world better in every way. https://t.co/vEeBuXDVOw

Meanwhile, Emily Coutts (Detmer) took to Instagram with a behind the scenes photo and a thank you to the fans:
But it wasn’t only the faces we see onscreen who are mourning the show’s loss. Graphic Designer Timothy Peel had this to say:
#StarTrek Well it's been the most extraordinary journey over the last 7 years. I will forever be grateful to all the cast and crew(s) of Discovery. We launched so many spinoffs and Short Treks over the years. The grand experiment is what Star Trek is all about.

Finally, actor Kenneth Mitchell, who appeared in various roles throughout seasons 1 - 3 of DISCO and is now, sadly, suffering from the late stages of ALS, colloquially known as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” tweeted a message about the cancellation:
a magical TIME. 🥹💎 #StarTrekDiscovery pic.twitter.com/p3fZXaCOcP
