IDW Brings Back a Classic Villain in Star Trek: Defiant #5
APRIL 5, 2023 - One of the most memorable antagonists from Star Trek: The Next Generation makes a delightful reappearance in this ever-expanding world. With Star Trek: Picard's third season's steadfast dedication to revitalizing villains like Lore and Moriarty, it's no surprise that the spinoff of IDW Publishing's series, Star Trek: Defiant, features none other than Worf commandeering a rather intimidating band of followers. Additionally, Sela's appearance on the cover of Star Trek: Defiant #5, indicates that Tasha Yar's half-Romulan daughter originating from "Yesterday's Enterprise" will emerge once more.
While her intentions are unknown, her presence on the cover takes fans back to the episode packed with world-altering temporal rifts and battles between the warring USS Enterprise-C and a band of Romulan Warbirds, that resulted in a tentative allegiance between the Federation and the Klingons. However, with the ship entering the temporal rift, an alternate timeline was born where the Empire and the Federation were in conflict during Star Trek: The Next Generation.
In this timeline, Tasha Yar survived, serving on the Enterprise-D. Tasha followed Picard when it was revealed that the timeline had gone severely wrong, leading to the Romulans destroying the ship while killing or imprisoning any survivors. A Romulan general took a liking to Tasha, and made her his consort, which eventually led to the birth of their daughter, Sela. When Tasha attempted to escape the Empire with her baby daughter, she was caught due to Sela's cries and later executed. Despite her half-human status, Sela rose to the rank of Commander in the Romulan Star Empire, and went on to meet Picard on multiple occasions. She repeatedly attempted to spark conflict between the two parties through political interference and the failed invasion of planet Vulcan.
Whether Sela is a member of the Defiant crew, or working against them, we can only speculate for now. Discover more about this exciting character's potential story on ComicBook.com.
