LEGO Masters finalist Sam Hatmaker shows off hand-built Star Trek IDIC commemorating Gene Roddenberry’s birthday

LEGO Masters finalist Sam Hatmaker’s LEGO IDIC

In celebration of what would have been Gene Roddenberry’s 99th birthday this week, toy developer Samuel Hatmaker, a finalist on the first season of competition show LEGO Masters, built a special tribute to Star Trek’s creator: a Vulcan IDIC constructed from LEGOs.

Hatmaker tweeted a short video of his LEGO creation, saying, “I am a big fan of the Star Trek Universe, an idealistic world where EVERYONE is truly considered equal and valued. Today, Gene Roddenberry’s 99th Birthday, I built an IDIC. IDIC is an acronym for Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations, the basis of Vulcan philosophy.”

The LEGO structure was built in the shape of the traditional IDIC pendant - a triangle and a circle, intersecting with a jewel in the center. But this IDIC made of LEGOs doesn’t have a jewel in the center. Hatmaker chose to honor Roddenberry by placing a LEGO starship Enterprise on the IDIC - held aloft in the space where the jewel would normally be. With Hatmaker’s design and color scheme, it seems to give the appearance that the Enterprise is flying at warp speed.

A Michigan native, Hatmaker lived in New York CIty for two decades before heading west to settle in Los Angeles. Hatmaker has developed toys for many major brands, such as Marvel, DC, Disney, Mattel, and Hasbro.
