Star Trek super-fan releases short film created in his home-built basement set
JANUARY 6, 2022 - Back in February of 2021, we told you about Todd Spann, the Indianapolis-based science fiction super fan who created a Star Trek set in his basement. The project took more than three years to complete. Nearly a year later, Spann made use of his creation, releasing a new short film based on Star Trek and filmed entirely on location at his home in Indiana.
When we say it’s a short film, we mean it. Spann’s “movie” is just 73 seconds long, bringing together serious drama and Starfleet protocols that should feel familiar to fans of the franchise. The scene opens with a view of the operations console, where we learn that a Borg ship has been detected in Federation space. Going to “red alert”, the captain is beamed back to the ship and the course is set for Starbase 47.
47!
Spann’s film makes use of most of his Star Trek sets, including the operations console, functioning automatic doors, “red alert” sirens/lights, and transporter pad. An outdoor scene was also filmed, showing the captain enjoying his shore leave as the news of a Borg threat comes in.
Star Trek sets aren’t the only thing Spann has built in his home. With a lot of time and patience, Spann also transformed his basement to include a TARDIS exterior from the Doctor Who franchise. Enter the TARDIS doors and you’ll find yourself in Spann’s computer room, which houses a working replica of the TARDIS console, complete with lights and sound. Keep looking around and you also find Spann’s replica of a stargate from… well, Stargate.
You can check out Todd Spann’s short film on his YouTube channel. While you’re there, you can also find detailed videos on the construction of the various sets in his home.
