Chris Pine set to star in new Dungeons & Dragons film for Paramount Pictures
DECEMBER 16, 2020 - Paramount may have put a fourth Kelvin timeline Star Trek film on the backburner for now, but that hasn’t stopped them from giving actor Chris Pine a piece of the action (pun intended). Variety reports that Pine is currently in negotiations with Paramount to star in the upcoming film adaptation of the classic role playing game Dungeons & Dragons.
Teaming up with eOne films and toy maker Hasbro, who owns the rights to the game, Paramount will co-produce the film. Variety noted the project had been in development at Warner Bros. for a number of years, but licensing agreements for the film fell through and Paramount has stepped in to help produce the movie. Dungeons & Dragons will be written and directed by Jonathan Goldstein and Jon Francis Daley, the same team responsible for the 2018 film Game Night. eOne will be responsible for the film’s distribution in Canada and the United Kingdom, while Paramount will take the lead on global distribution.
Chris Pine has been busy since his last adventure as Captain Kirk. The actor is reprising his role in the Wonder Woman franchise in the upcoming sequel film Wonder Woman 1984, also starring Gal Gadot, and is due in theaters and on HBO Max December 25th. He is also currently working on the Olivia Wilde film Don’t Worry Darling, starring Florence Pugh and Harry Styles.
It will, however, be a little while before we see Dungeons & Dragons hit the big screen. Initially planned for a 2021 release, the film is now expected in May of 2022.
