We’re coming up on the 40th anniversary of the release of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. During a panel at Comic Con last weekend, it was revealed that Paramount Pictures is considering a 4K re-release of the iconic film.

TrekMovie.com reported that during the panel for the podcast “Inglorious Treksperts”, David Fein, the producer of the 2001 Director’s Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, announced from the audience that he was in talks with Paramount to create a 4K version of the film, for release on Blu-ray.

TrekMovie caught up after the panel with Daren Dochterman, one of the hosts of “Inglorious Treksperts” and visual effects supervisor on the TMP Director’s Edition. He clarified Fein’s earlier comments, saying of the Paramount talks, “the green light has not yet been given, but it is a yellow light. We have been given permission to talk about it at San Diego Comic-Con.”

TrekMovie noted that a timeline has yet to be confirmed, but that Dochterman said, “If it is going to happen within the next couple of months, we would definitely have a big announcement by the actual 40th-anniversary date,” which is on December 6th.
