Preview Strange New Worlds' New Season with Wil Wheaton and The Ready Room
JUNE 14, 2023 – T-24 hours and counting to launch of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, season two. Today is a good day to prepare, and one way to do that is to watch a special preview episode of The Ready Room, with Wil Wheaton.
Wheaton notes at the beginning of what turns out to be an exciting, if more general, discussion, that SNW “brings us back to where it all began, with episodic storytelling. This series has the perfect mix of nostalgia and originality. When I watch it, I feel just like I did watching The Original Series in the 70s….”
Wheaton welcomed Anson Mount (Captain Pike), Rebecca Romijn (Number One), and Ethan Peck (Spock) to The Ready Room to talk about what’s coming up in the second season of Strange New Worlds. Romijn sets the tone almost immediately: “Well, buckle up for season two is all I can say. Everything from season one we bring into season two, and then some.”
Responding to Wheaton’s question, which came down to, “Why Star Trek,” Mount said, “I would say really the driving energy of Star Trek is the instinct that we have to walk beyond the campfire light to see what’s out there in the darkness beyond…. There’s something really human that it taps into that I haven’t seen anywhere else.” And Romijn added that “Strange New Worlds is the perfect starting point for the Star Trek uninitiated.”
Continuing with the theme of SNW as an entry point for the Star Trek universe, Peck said that he realized recently that he could be the first Spock encountered by some viewers, rather than the third one. While imprinting the character with pieces of himself, he realizes that “I have to adhere to rules as an actor that were set out by Leonard Nimoy in his version of Spock.” Peck also noted that the tone of SNW is such that it takes itself seriously but leaves room for humor, and that combined with its episodic format makes the show a good introduction to Star Trek.
