Sigourney Weaver still holds hope for Galaxy Quest revival: “it was such a wonderful experience for us”

MARCH 12, 2021 - With all of the fantastic Star Trek films out there, there is one that has stood the test of time, continually shining above the rest as a fan favorite. Obviously, that film is Galaxy Quest! In a recent interview with Collider, Sigourney Weaver, who played Gwen DeMarco (aka Lieutenant Tawny Madison) in the film, said that a revival of some kind is still a possibility. Whether or not that revival would be as a series or a feature film, however, remains unclear.

Back in 2015, Amazon Studios was planning to bring Galaxy Quest back as a series, but those plans were shelved after the tragic passing of costar Alan Rickman in January of 2016. This past January, Tim Allen said rebooting Galaxy Quest is frequently talked about, but is currently “in a holding pattern”. 

Weaver’s comments weren’t any more definitive, but the actress does seem convinced that a potential reboot would take place as a series. “We lost the wonderful Alan [Rickman] unexpectedly, so that was put in mothballs,” Weaver said of the planned series, adding, “but I think they are finally now reviving it.” According to Weaver, a rebooted series would feature the original cast “being brought into the series with another young cast.” While Weaver admittedly doesn’t know all the details, she said filming Galaxy Quest was a “wonderful experience” and believes the rest of the cast would be happy to participate in a revival, though she isn’t sure when that might happen.

Calling the late Alan Rickman “irreplaceable, eternally,” Weaver said, “how they will find someone to play Alan's part, don't know, but I think that they have a very good idea of who to do it.”
