SEPTEMBER 29. 2O22 - “Space, the final frontier… These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise…” Or, at least, they were! Star Trek 4 (at least for the 2009 reboot series) has been in the rumor mill since 2016 when JJ Abrams and the team at Bad Robot brought Star Trek Beyond to the screens. That movie was the lowest grossing film from the reboot team, earning $343.5 million worldwide, and on Star Trek’s 50th anniversary, as well.

Yet Paramount has been trying to continue the adventures. Multiple Trek films have been discussed and tentatively green lit from directors such as S.L Clarkson, Noah Hawley and Quinton Tarantino. There have been discussion with bringing Chris Hemsworth (Thor) back for an adventure with Chris Pine’s Kirk.

It was gladly received, yet highly head-scratch-able when this past February Abrams announced that the new, untitled Trek movie would premier on December 22, 2023, with Matt Shakman (Wandavision) taking the helm, including all of the original reboot cast.

The only problem: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, and Simon Pegg were not officially attached to the project. Then, Shakman was lured back to Marvel with the new Fantastic Four movie, and everything was back off of the table.

To coin a popular phrase, Star Trek (4 or XIV, depending on how you look at it) “is dead, Jim!” This week, Paramount officially removed the next Trek film from its 2023 slate. The news is disappointing, but some might also say it was inevitable.

Yet there is still a plethora of Trek available. With five on-going series on the Paramount+ streaming service, Trek is definitely still going to be around for a while.
