'Star Trek: Prodigy' Blu-ray Sets Sell Out As Animated Show's Future Is Still In Doubt
JUNE 29, 2023 - Are you thinking of getting the first season of Star Trek: Prodigy on Blu-Ray? With Star Trek having a big fan base, the news of the show’s cancellation and removal from Paramount+ spread like wildfire. As we reported on Monday, “The reactions were immediate, with fans and PRO staff alike taking to Twitter with #SaveStarTrekProdigy, which is currently trending on the site.”
Retailers like Walmart, Best Buy, Target, and Amazon have their stocks of Blu-rays sold out, although the DVD set is still available in select stores but in standard definition while Blu-ray plays high-definition. Both the Blu-Ray and DVD sets contain only the first half of season 1 which consists of episodes 1 - 10, with episodes 11 - 20 currently unscheduled for release.
Nickelodeon, the service which was originally meant to carry the show before Paramount+ purchased them, is mainly for kids, where you can find TV series like Rubble & Crew, Paw Patrol, SpongeBob SquarePants … etc. Star Trek: Prodigy was meant to be for kids with a similar premise to Star Trek Voyager but with a young crew who was in prison in the Delta Quadrant.
With Star Trek having a large fan base, Paramount+ took the series on, hoping it would become a boost but it did not. I think that it was better off on the Nickelodeon channel. Paramount+ does have 1973’s Star Trek: The Animated Series but its main appeal is for older adults.
With Star Trek: Prodigy’s good rating on Rotten Tomatoes and the excellent Blu-ray sales, who knows? Someone might pick it up again and continue the series where it was left off. Even Kate Mulgrew and Robert Beltran returned to voice their Voyager characters, so anything can happen!
With the cancellation, Star Trek: Prodigy’s creators are on the hunt for a new home for season 2. According to ComicBook.com, “If Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 doesn't find a new home, several of the show's storylines will go unresolved…” Head on over to the website for more details.
