FEBRUARY 17, 2023 – As many of you know (never mind what this writer knew and when he knew it), the in-universe settings for Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan are about fifteen years apart. Fifteen years. That’s a long time unaccounted for, when the crew of the USS Enterprise were up to something or other, but what?

Well, Screen Rant is letting us know about a new comic miniseries from IDW that will help fill in the gap between the end of Kirk & Company’s encounter with V’ger and their subsequent tussle with Khan Noonien Singh. The series is meant to be a sequel to TMP.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture: Echoes picks up the story following the end of the film when “a space anomaly thrusts a criminal mastermind—pursued by a very determined pilot on a mission—into our universe, the Enterprise must stop them from unintentionally starting a war with the Romulans and unleashing a superweapon of foreign technology into the system. But things get infinitely more complicated when these newcomers to our reality remove their helmets, revealing that they’re doppelgängers” of the crew.

The five-issue series is written by Marc Guggenheim and illustrated by Oleg Chudakov. Both credit TMP with being a crucial part of their Trek fandom. Readers can expect from these two a story told from a perspective other than that of the Enterprise crew but via an approach likened to revisiting childhood.

The first issue of the new series is expected in May.
